This is an article published in the University of Tennessee's journal Vernacular: New Connections in Language, Literature, and Culture. Through a comparison of Mir's play and Marin's film, this essay explores the philosophical underpinnings of citizenship and how, especially amongst the Latin American characters in certain works, politics of exclusion and demonization create a cultural vacuum on the individual level that destabilizes the entire nation-state system and blurs the meaning of belonging. This project formed a part of my Master's Degree dissertation.

This article is published in the University of Wisconsin-Madison's journal Latin American, Caribbean, and Iberian Studies Review. Based on word play involving the word mucho, "a lot" in Spanish, the title suggests with the word "m(u)chismo" that machismo and traditional Latin American expressions of masculinity have their basis in the grotesque tradition of exaggeration and overabundance.

During the summers of 2017 and 2018, I traveled to San Basilio de Palenque, a small village outside of Cartagena, Colombia to investigate a creole language called Lengua Palenquera. Although this language shares many linguistic elements with Spanish, it is not mutually intelligible with Spanish, and native speakers of both languages consider themselves bilinguals. While there, I worked with participants from the village, conducting psycholinguistics experiments with the goal of discerning the border between Lengua Palenquera and Spanish. This research was completed in furtherance of my undergraduate thesis for the Schreyer Honors College at Penn State University.
